アメリカ外交官との交流プログラム

3月26日、米国大使館より外交官のフィリオン（Fillion）氏をお招きし、本校の高校1・2年生の有志10名と交流会を行いました。

当日はフィリオン氏によるAmerican Innovationsについてのプレゼンテーションから始まり、続いて Can Innovation Happen Anywhere? What problems do you want to solve? というテーマで全体討論を行いました。

日本でイノベーションが生まれにくい理由について、生徒からは日米の教育システムの違いに言及する意見が多く挙がりました。それに対しフィリオン氏からは、「現状に不満がある時、それを変えようと行動すること自体がイノベーションである」という力強いメッセージをいただき、どのような環境であってもイノベーションの機会は身近にあるということに改めて気づかされました。

また、今回はポケトーク株式会社のご協力により、自動翻訳機を活用しながら英語で議論を行いました。生徒たちは英語で意見を発信し、その発言が即座にスクリーンへ英語・日本語で投影されたことで、議論の流れをスムーズに共有することができました。ご協力いただきました関係者の皆様に、この場を借りて心より感謝申し上げます。

An Exchange Program with a U.S. Diplomat

On March 26th, we welcomed Mr. Fillion from the U.S. Embassy for an interactive session with 10th and 11th grade students.

The event started with his presentation about American Innovations. He introduced a couple of great American innovations that are so integrated into our lives that we take them for granted. At the end of the presentation, Mr. Fillion posed two discussion questions: “Can Innovation Happen Anywhere?” and “What problems do you want to solve?”

In the following discussion, students pointed to the differences in education systems between the U.S. and Japan as a reason for fewer innovations in Japan. In response, Mr. Fillion suggested that innovations can happen everywhere around us when we face challenges that we are unhappy with: “Any solution can be an innovation.” This idea was literally an eye-opener to all the students.

We would like to mention that this exchange program was supported by Pocketalk’s innovative devices. These devices instantly translated our utterances into Japanese and projected them onto a screen, which enabled us to follow the discussion smoothly in both English and Japanese. We truly appreciate their support.
